Davos! Everybody's blogging at Davos!

My god! Something has stirred me to write this morning, and it's Davos! I'm not even there, but it seems like everyone else is! So, I've just decided (spur of the moment, I know) that I will now enter the Davos section of the blogosphere myself. Right here from my little pad on the Monterey Bay. Why, you ask? Why not! Just because I'm not there doesn't mean I can't read and comment on what people who are there are saying.

Hey, dig this: what if every blogger in the world, even those who only write once every three million techno years were to spend one whole day (dare I ask for two?) blogging about nothing but Davos? Can you imagine it? Let's all scream it from our virtual rooftops so the monied people there can hear it loud and clear! Who's with me?

Mississippians Rise Up Over Rangel’s Comment - New York Times

From the NY Times article:

...On Wednesday, the day after the Democrats won a House majority, Mr. Rangel, the Harlem Democrat poised to becomechairman of the Ways and Means Committee, which writes tax legislation,talked about winning back more of the tax revenue that New York Statesends to the Treasury. He said, “Mississippi gets more than their fair share back in federal money, but who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?”

Just when things are looking good for the party, and it's leaders seem to be trying to get the message sent by the American people in Tuesday's midterm election sweep of the Republicans, somebody has to go and say something stupid. Not just ANYBODY mind you, but the next head of the House Ways & Means Committee, that high powered, high dollar gang in Washington that gets to decide how much dough a given state may get for something they want.

I'd be lying if I didn't say that a part of my first reaction to his comment was, "Oh no, not him. Why did it have to be him?" Not that any other "him" (or "her) would have been better, but did it HAVE to be "Mr. Rangel, the Harlem Democrat"? The other part of my reaction was: "Morgan Freeman wants to live there. He likes it so much, in fact, that he has a farm there, a 5 star restaurant that is the toast of the town, and one of the hottest Blues clubs in the whole nation! (Which he, and his business partner, have now exported to Nashville, as well) He, and his lovely wife (who I happen to know from my childhood way back in the day, and yes, I know him too), have lived there for years. Whenever he's not making a movie somewhere, chillin' in Hollywood, or travelling, and accepting numerous honours, he's there on the Mississippi Delta loving every minute of it.

I was hoping the Dems could go one full week without somebody screwing up, though in retrospect, I must have been on crack to think such a thing was possible. It's the Democratic Party, after all! Welcome to the Big Tent!

My apologies for sounding so cynical a note.

Like the rest of us, I've been battered, and beaten over the head, with the vagaries of Washington politics, and I'm tired. Though not too tired to call it like I see it. You messed up Charlie. Not enough to blow your cool, new job, but enough to make people shake their heads, and throw their hands in the sky, asking "Why, lord, why?" A word to the wise. The next time you feel so happy about being a New Yorker, and think: “I just love New York so much that I can’t understand why everyone wouldn’t want to live here.”, keep it low-key, maybe even keep it to yourself, and just do your job.

We will all be the better for it.

So, I had an interesting thought today. Maybe I'd be happier if I just treated politics like a World Cup fan. I could just pick my teams, and watch it like ESPN. Hell, I could even start my own fantasy league online, and get other people to pay me for it. Can you just see the possibilities?

Though I've been buried in podcasting for the last year, the sounds of Bloggers everywhere typing away at the computers their parents bought them, or their office computers, school laptops, cell phones and PDA's. The sound has gotten so loud I'm feeling some electricity here. Time for more blogging? Apparently. Who will read? Hmmmm. Who cares? Hmmmmmm. Apparently, many people. Maybe. Or maybe not. Either way I can hear all those keys tapping, and all those video cameras whirring (silently, of course). Tapping away at our collectively sleeping consciousness, taping our dreams for a time-delayed replay, and whispering "I'm here! We're here! Where are you?"...

Critics said he was just passing gas, but eyewitness accounts dispute these allegations. Yes Mikey, he likes it. He really likes it.

As his uncle I welcome him too, with open arms. I salute his new parents as well, and wish the best for them as they embark on this new turn in their journey together.

Today the revolution begins, and the world will never again be the same...

Podcasting power The Internet allows anyone with some compuer savvy to produce their own radio broadcasts

It's a gray Sunday afternoon in Monterey and Garland Thompson and Shawn Singletary frantically prepare to podcast to the world from their makeshift home studio.

On this day, the cramped apartment bedroom has been transformed into Studio T (short for Thompson), where a trio of computers are plugged into a 16-track Mackie recording mixer. Sound levels are checked on standard CD player headphones. The two Monterey-based poets operate their show, "Sunday Go To Meetin'" -- a reference to a popular Southern slang term denoting a post-church service gathering -- as if they will broadcast live to an audience of thousands; in reality, they'll be lucky if they get a few hundred.

there's a new theatre in town when it comes to the big lights of New York City. In a historic moment this past sunday, the old Virginia theatre at 245 w. 52nd st. was renamed the AUGUST WILSON MEMORIAL THEATRE! A great moment of remembrance for a great playwright, and man. When i look at that building i will always remember August, and all he stood for. i hope you will too. Thanks August, for everything...
